🎙️ Entry 4: The Business Side of Voice Acting

 

Hey hey! Welcome back to GemuVoKS, where I share my journey as I go through the Certified Voice Artist Program.

If the past sessions were all about discovering the art and creativity behind voice acting, Session 4 took a deep dive into something equally important - the business side of the craft.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend this session live due to a family affair. Buti na lang, one of the best things about CVAP is that they make sure you never miss out - there’s the Facebook Live running alongside the Zoom class and the VOD recordings you can watch anytime. So technically, hindi talaga ako naiwan.


🗂️ Morning Session with Ms. Lyn Gonzales - Legalities, Paperwork, and How to Earn

Session 4 was actually a half-day session, since the afternoon was reserved for Batch 32’s final presentation prep. (Shoutout to my BR mates for holding it down for us during the meeting!)

The morning session, handled by Ms. Lyn Gonzales, tackled one of the most crucial aspects of being a voice artist - understanding the legalities, paperwork, and income side of the industry.

She started by explaining how to secure your first voice acting job, beginning with the Voice Artist résumé - something quite different from the usual CVs we send for corporate work.
She pointed out what really matters to clients, like your recording setup details, and what’s unnecessary, like your birthday or unrelated work experience.

Then came the part about demo reels, which are basically your calling card as a voice artist. Ms. Lyn discussed the difference between a voice-over demo and a character demo, how long each should be, and what kind of clips best highlight your strengths.


⚖️ Contracts, Clients, and Protecting Yourself

This part really showed how professional the voice acting industry can be.
Ms. Lyn went through the common contract clauses every voice artist should understand - things that protect both you and your client.
And honestly, that alone makes the CVAP program worth it. Consulting a lawyer for contract advice could easily cost as much as the whole course, so getting this kind of guidance as part of the training is a huge bonus.

She also discussed yellow and red flags to watch out for when dealing with potential clients.
It’s not always about the big payout - sometimes, the best deal is the one that respects your time, effort, and rights. That part really hit home for me; it’s easy to get excited when someone offers a high rate, but you still need to know how to spot what’s too good to be true.


To cap things off, Ms. Lyn shared a long list of where to find voice-over jobs - a great resource for beginners like me who are still exploring the field.

I honestly wish I could’ve attended live because this session was full of practical, real-world lessons.
Creative skill is one thing, but knowing how to protect yourself, price your work, and navigate the business side of the industry is what turns passion into a sustainable career.

This session reminded me that being a voice artist isn’t just about how you sound - it’s also about how you manage your craft like a pro.

And that wraps up Session 4 of my CVAP journey!
It may not have been as hands-on or creative as the past ones, but it was definitely one of the most eye-opening sessions so far.
Sometimes, the not-so-glamorous parts - contracts, paperwork, and client management — are what keep the dream alive.
